Bio
Nigerian-American composer, vocalist, and percussionist Tosin Aribisala creates a distinctive musical tapestry that honors his African heritage while embracing the breadth of American genres. His innovative sound weaves together jazz, Afrobeat, Yoruba rhythms, funk, rock, reggae, and Latin American influences—a fusion he has coined “Alternative Afrobeat.” A multilingual artist, Tosin writes and performs in Yoruba, Pidgin English, and English, drawing inspiration from legendary musicians including Fela Kuti, Tony Allen, Art Blakey, Bob Marley, King Sunny Ade, Manu Dibango, Majek Fashek, Keziah Jones, Sting, Peter Gabriel, and Weather Report's Joe Zawinul and Jaco Pastorius.
Tosin's musical education began in childhood through his father's extensive record collection in Nigeria. Beyond simply listening, he studied liner notes to understand both the creative and business aspects of music production. "My music is a mixture of African rhythmic textures and some elements of jazz and blues, with lyrics of hope, love and human realities," he explains. His infectious grooves and versatility have led to collaborations with renowned artists including Arturo O'Farrell, Vieux Farka Toure, Femi Kuti, Taj Mahal, Baba Maal, Fatoumata Diawara, and Spyro Gyra, among others.
Tosin's compositions have earned critical acclaim, receiving the Best World Music Compositions award from the Maryland State Arts Council in both 2015 and 2017. His expertise in African rhythms has been featured on the Drumeo Channel, and he has served as a clinician/performer at the Percussive Arts Society's International Convention. Television appearances include MTV's Real World Show, where he performed his signature Drum Monologue, as well as segments on Voice of America and Fox 5 News.
As a bandleader and producer, Tosin has released four albums and multiple singles. His ensemble has performed at festivals and prestigious jazz venues across the United States and internationally, both as headliners and supporting acts.
Passionate about music education, Tosin continues to inspire drummers and musicians across diverse demographics through workshops and teaching programs, using the art of drumming as a cultural phenomenon. He remains actively engaged in composing new material for his band while pursuing collaborative projects with fellow artists.
